BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. ($RIMM), struggling to deal with sagging demand for its aging smartphone line, will cut its global workforce by about 2,000, leaving it with about 17,000 employees.
RIM, which has been losing ground to rivals, sliced its earnings outlook in June and warned that it would start laying off employees.
In a statement early Monday, RIM said the size of the workforce reduction is in line with the preliminary estimate it factored into guidance provided last month.
