The scare tactics by the government leave me cold. The idea that, suddenly, Tim Geithner, Bill Daley and President Obama can tell us what will happen with the markets bothers me immensely. All of Washington has held contempt for the markets forever, and the idea that they can actually try to create a panic is so artificial and forced -- the Asian markets gambit! -- that there is no surprise that the market can rally.
It is all such nonsense. But that's what people know to do.
Do I like the market? Meaningless question. I am simply trying to tell you that the whipsaw, the whipsaw that happens the moment you walk on the field, is devastating.
So don't walk on the field, the field being the S&P 500 and the desire to sell, short and buy puts on it, even as the individual members refuse to play ball.
I come back to something fairly time-honored: People are selling something unrelated to the companies themselves, they are selling the S&P 500 futures. That means they are selling Eaton ($ETN) and Roper Industries ($ROP) , quintessential American companies that are doing everything right. They are selling Kimberly-Clark ($KMB) , which had a dismal quarter, or at least dismal talk, and it doesn't go down.
They are selling Schlumberger ($SLB) and Baker Hughes ($BHI) , huge parts of the S&P 500, simply because of the rumor-mongering and anger in Washington. They are selling Caterpillar ($CAT) after is has been killed because of the pique of Obama
It is all such nonsense. But that's what people know to do.
I would rather take advantage in the run in gold and broaden what I want to own from the SPDR Gold Trust ($GLD) to Goldcorp ($GG) , which has lowered finding costs substantially because of byproducts and at the same time is growing like a weed.
